Rock Climbing to Success with Coach Annabel
My coaching philosophy consists of the rock-climbing theory that a dear mentor shared with me as I rediscovered my professional interests. For generations we’ve thought about success as a ladder climbing metaphor, but instead why not think of success as rock climbing? Rock climbing is described as an activity where participants climb up, down, or across rocks. The end goal is to reach the summit or end point of a route, similar to any personal or professional goals we establish for ourselves. Through my coaching experience with Success Cohorts I share this model with members and present myself as their “rock-climbing buddy.” Wherever you go, I’ll be there, whether it’s going to be taking a few steps forward, having to reroute and take a couple side steps, perhaps having to start from the bottom, it doesn’t matter. I am there to spot you as a coach. I rather we look at a mountain of rocks with options than one ladder, with one step after another, the ladder therefore feels more limited. Failure can therefore be more daunting when we look at success as a straight shot, but if we grow an accepting mentality of success being a journey with many different rocks to pull ourselves up from, we are more likely to reach our end goals, and be accepting of our journey.
